They are passionate, educated, and ready to contribute \u2014 yet unclear pathways, outdated curricula, and financial limitations keep them stuck at the threshold of the working world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a student problem. It\u2019s a system-wide call to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The invisible wall &#8211; why humanities students struggle to find jobs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 60% of surveyed students said they were uncertain about their career options in the humanities. Most pointed to a disconnect between what they study and the jobs they might get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I chose my degree, I had no idea what career options would follow.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus group, part of the HUMAN JOBS project, revealed a common struggle: students love their subjects but can\u2019t see the road ahead. Theoretical knowledge is plentiful. Practical experience? Rare. As a result, many feel lost, underprepared, and demotivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What employers really want \u2014 and why it\u2019s not just a degree<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Small and medium-sized employers (SMEs) echoed the same concern from the other side: graduates have knowledge, but lack job-ready skills. Digital tools, teamwork, adaptability, and project management \u2014 these are the real priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Employers want us to know digital platforms, but we never practice them in class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soft skills, like communication and empathy, were consistently ranked as more decisive than technical expertise. And yet, few students feel they\u2019re actively trained in these areas. It&#8217;s a painful mismatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bridging the gap &#8211; career guidance as a game-changer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if every university had a career center tailored specifically for humanities students \u2014 not just offering CV tips, but introducing real mentors from NGOs, museums, and cultural industries. This isn\u2019t a dream. It\u2019s a top recommendation from the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are eager for role models, success stories, and structured guidance. Over 70% expressed a desire for more tailored career services. It\u2019s time to deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s Not Just the Skills \u2014 It\u2019s the System<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For many students, unpaid internships are the only way to gain experience. But what if you can\u2019t afford to work for free?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I would like to take an internship, but I can\u2019t afford to work for free.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial insecurity isn\u2019t just an inconvenience. It\u2019s a barrier that excludes capable, motivated youth \u2014 especially those without family support. Employers admit unpaid internships are unfair, yet without financial incentives or support structures, little changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Replacing unpaid internships with funded apprenticeships or tax-backed hiring programs is not just fairer. It\u2019s smarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reimagining the future &#8211; from stigma to strength<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report makes it clear: students are internalising negative stereotypes about their field. Humanities are seen as &#8220;less valuable,&#8221; &#8220;impractical,&#8221; or simply &#8220;a dead end.&#8221; We must change this narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public campaigns, media visibility, and showcasing success stories of humanities graduates are key to shifting perceptions. Soft skills, creativity, and adaptability are the lifeblood of the future workforce. It\u2019s time we say that \u2014 and show it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Human Jobs project&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This article is based on findings from the Erasmus+ funded project &#8220;HUMAN JOBS: Assessing the employability potential of humanities students and graduates&#8221; (Project No: KA220-YOU-9BA90B39).
